Project Context
In the fall of 2017, Purple Crayon Players was putting up a musical adaptation of the picture book Me…Jane, a story of young Jane Goodall learning about the stories of the animals surrounding her. As this was the first time the musical was being produced since its original production at the Kennedy Center, marketing and publicity were the key focus areas of the season.
Process
I kicked off the process by searching for visual elements from the clips of the musical I found online as well as from the picture book the musical is based off of. As the musical was new (especially in the Midwest), I found it important to preserve the illustrative style as well as several other key elements from the picture book. In the subsequent meetings with the marketing team and the producer, I asked them to choose some of the most significant animals that come up in the story. I turned young Jane Goodall, the highlighted animals, and Goodall’s stuffed monkey Jubilee into illustrations, and added texture to add the impression that they popped out of a picture book.
Prior to this project, my previous experience in marketing design had exclusively targeted university students. As the main audience for the musical was young children in Evanston and the entire Chicagoland area, I had to break out of my usual design framework that relies heavily on relevant internet references and witty copy.
